Laser Hair Removal

What is IPL Hair Removal?

Though technically not containing a laser IPL is sometimes referred to as "laser hair removal". IPL-based methods sometimes called "phototricholysis", or "photoepilation", use xenon flash lamps that emit full spectrum light. IPL or Intense pulse light systems typically output wavelengths between 400 nm and 1200 nm.

Various cut-off filters are commonly used to selectively filter out lower wavelengths, especially potentially damaging ultraviolet light. The resulting light has a spectral range that targets specific structures and chromophores (e.g. melanin in hair, or oxyhemoglobin in blood vessels) these are heated to destruction and reabsorbed by the body. IPL shares some similarities with laser treatments, in that they both use light to heat and destroy their targets. But unlike lasers that use a single wavelength (colour) of light which typically matches only one chromophore, IPL uses a broad spectrum that when used with filters, allows it to be used against several conditions.

Setsuko Beauty Clinic uses the latest laser technology from Lynton Lasers. Lynton Lasers are industry leaders, making medical lasers for the private sector and the NHS. Alexandrite, NdYAG, Diode and IPL all have certain skin types, hair types and hair size that they excel at. In addition, the quality of the machine, the training of the practitioner and the maintenance of the equipment can have a huge impact on the effect of the treatment. What is Laser Hair removal?

It is a process of hair removal by means of exposure to pulses of laser light that destroy the hair follicle.

The primary principle behind laser hair removal is selective photothermolysis, the matching of a specific wavelength of light and pulse duration to obtain the best effect on targeted tissue with minimal effect on surrounding tissue. Lasers light can be absorbed by melanin, thereby heating up the basal stem cells in a hair follicle, while not heating the rest of the skin.

Melanin is considered the primary chromophore for all hair removal lasers currently on the market. Melanin occurs naturally in the skin and gives skin and hair their colour. There are two types of melanin in hair. Eumelanin gives hair brown or black colour, while pheomelanin gives hair blonde or red colour. Because of the selective absorption of photons of laser light, only hair with colour such as black, brown, or reddish-brown hair or dirty blonde can be removed. White hair, light blonde and strawberry blonde hair do not respond well. Light skin and dark hair are an ideal combination, being most effective and producing the best results.
